How does one stay polished in a pandemic? Tracee Ellis Ross has tackled socially-distanced style by asking her right-hand woman Karla Welch to throw clothes over her garden gate. It’s no surprise that TER won’t let lockdown get in the way of a look. “I am a true lover of fashion,” she told British Vogue at the 2019 Fashion Awards.
Before taking to the virtual sofa for an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show, she tasked super-stylist Welch with finding an appropriate outfit that would have just as much impact on Zoom as it would IRL.
Look 12 from S.R. Studio’s spring/summer 2021 couture collection – contemporary artist Sterling Ruby’s first presentation on the Paris Fashion Week schedule (his first was at Pitti in June 2019) – was Ross’s chosen attire for the evening appointment. In Welch’s absence, the star hand-picked her own accessories and footwear: chunky lace-up boots from The North Face x Gucci’s coveted collaboration, and Phoebe Philo-era Céline Byzantine enamel hoops made the cut.
“I’m so jealous that you’re in the studio,” the star told Fallon, while wearing what can only be described as a fashion masterpiece. Before the show, Ross and her glam squad – hairstylist Nai’vasha, make-up artist Tasha Reiko Brown and colourist Amanda George – staged an impromptu photoshoot in her back garden, a spot she has utilised throughout the pandemic to give fans a glimpse at her chic at-home outfits.
The actor’s earrings aren’t the only bit of Old Céline in her closet. Throughout 2018, she was practically inseparable from a pair of Philo’s heeled Victorian-esque lace-up glove booties. The sleek, highly practical Cabas Phantom tote is another one of her vintage favourites, though the cognac top-handle hasn’t been seen on her arm for some time. Maybe Hedi Slimane’s timeless Triomphe cross-body, loved by Kaia Gerber, Angelina Jolie and Blackpink’s Lisa, could be next to take her fancy.
