This week we’ve been looking through our archives from 1971 – the year the UK switched to decimal currency and said goodbye to the old penny and threepenny bit and the first ever postal strike was held.

Some notable chart toppers were Rod Stewart’s Maggie May and George Harrison with My Sweet Lord.

On the entertainment scene the seventh James Bond film Diamonds are Forever was released.

And here, in what was still known as Cumberland, two well-loved teachers were retiring from schools in Whitehaven and Carlisle and beauty contests were still in their heyday and one of our photos show contestants who took part in the Miss Whitehaven Rugby League competition.

Three of our photos are a bit of a mystery – who was the young lady sporting hot pants at a West Cumbrian petrol station and who were the “Comets girls” pictured on a car in Bolton Street, Workington?

And were you a member of the band 22nd Street or do you know who they were? If you recognise anyone please get in touch.
