NZ House & Garden’s refresh is revealed in the August edition, in stores from July 19.

New Zealand’s favourite lifestyle magazine, NZ House & Garden, has been given a makeover.

Editor Naomi Larkin likens the refresh to calling in an interior designer for your home: the same content, but with a fresh look and feel.

“Longtime readers can rest assured that their beloved title remains intact: this is more of a stylistic zhoosh,” she says.

Larkin has been nudging the magazine towards a new, cleaner look since she took over as editor in May 2019.

The redesign is fully revealed in the August 2021 edition, on sale from today.

“We’ve been making some changes over time, but they’re not changes to the brand DNA. You’re not picking up a new magazine. This is still your friend – the magazine you know and love,” she says.

The magazine maintains its core focus of sharing beautiful homes and gardens.

The new design makes navigating the magazine easier, with stronger legibility and images given more space to breathe.

The name in te reo Māori – Toitū Kāinga, Toitū Māra – has also been added to the masthead. Kāinga means home. Māra is the name for a garden. Toitū means enduring. “Whether your kāinga or māra is a legacy or something just for now, the story of it will endure in our publication, in the lives of the people who share their stories and among our readers.”

Larkin says everyone loves seeing inside other people’s houses so hand-picked, beautiful homes and gardens will remain a mainstay, alongside other lifestyle content including food, drink, travel, shopping, beauty, books, art and new stores.

“Our core business of houses and gardens remains true, but we expect some people who may have stopped reading the magazine to take a second look, and for existing readers to be inspired even more by what we’re featuring.”

Larkin credits new art director Sacha Wackrow with spearheading the redesign. “She’s extremely talented and innovative, plus she has a strong understanding of the brand including its inspirational and aspirational direction.”

New Zealanders are generous about sharing their inspiring homes with readers and this generosity is exemplified by the huge success of the NZ House & Garden Tours, Larkin says.

“A lot of people are proud of what they’ve done. Being featured in the magazine is a personal record for them but many are motivated by a generosity around sharing ideas.”

The beauty pages will benefit from more white space and a cleaner look.
